# Renewal Dates & Status

What every status means, and the dates behind it.

When looking at your Locker, **Tap a Cert** to open it. Every Cert shows a **Status** at the top of its Certification screen, and a list of **Renewal dates** further down. Here's how to read them.

## Understanding Your Status

Many Cert Types come with their agency's renewal rule built in. For those Certs, CertLocker checks the rule against your card's expiration date, and your status will be one of the following:

* **Active**: Nothing is due yet.
* **Renewal open**: Your renewal window has opened.
* **Due soon**: You're within 30 days of your first deadline (for CE, your application, or the last day for the standard fee).
* **Past due**: You've passed that first deadline, or you're into a late-fee period, but your Cert hasn't expired yet.
* **Expired, reinstatement open**: Your Cert has expired, but you can still reinstate it. You may not practice under it until you do.
* **Lapsed**: The reinstatement period has ended, and the certification must be earned again.

For Cert Types without a renewal rule, your status is simply **Active**, **Expiring soon** (within 30 days of expiration), or **Expired**.

## Renewal Dates

Scroll down on the Certification screen to find **Renewal dates**, which lists the deadlines for your current renewal, such as when CE and your application are due, the last day for the standard fee, your expiration, and when reinstatement and re-entry end. Dates that fall on the same day are listed once.

## When Your Card and the Rule Disagree

Your card's expiration date is always the one CertLocker uses. If it doesn't match the date the agency's rule would give, the Certification screen will let you know and offer two choices: tap **Use rule date** to switch to the calculated date, or tap **Card is right** to keep your card's date (and hide the notice until the rule gives a different date).

## NREMT Dates

National Registry EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic certifications expire March 31, and EMR certifications expire September 30. A first certification issued January through June expires two years later on that date, and one issued July through December expires three years later. Each renewal adds two years to the previous expiration, so renewing early keeps the same date. Your new cycle starts the day after NREMT approves your application, which you enter as the **Approval (renewal) date** when you [renew](/my-certs/renew-a-cert.md).

All CE and your application are due by expiration. After that, reinstatement runs through the end of the following month (April 30, or October 31 for EMR) for an additional fee, and the certification lapses the next day.

## New Mexico EMS Dates

New Mexico EMS licenses (EMR, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, Paramedic, EMD, and EMD-I) expire March 31. A first license issued January through June expires two years later, and one issued July through December expires three years later. Each renewal adds two years. CE counts from the day after your previous expiration. The standard fee applies through the last day of February, March carries a late fee, reinstatement runs through May 31, and re-entry is possible for two years after expiration.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Your agency has the final word.** CertLocker's dates follow each agency's published rules, but always confirm your deadlines with your certifying agency.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.firecal.app/my-certs/renewal-dates-and-status.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
