# Renew a Cert

New card, same Cert, a clean slate.

When you renew a Cert, we recommend you keep using the same CertLocker record rather than creating a new one. CertLocker keeps each round of renewal as its own **Renewal Cycle**, with a snapshot of that cycle's progress and its Cert document.

## Tap to Open & Tap Renew

When looking at your Locker, **Tap a Cert** to open it, then tap **Renew** under the document preview. (You can also open the Renewals pane and tap **Start new renewal cycle**.) The **Process Renewal** sheet slides up.

## Reset Renewal Requirements

Decide whether to **Reset renewal requirements**. With it on, CertLocker archives your current cycle (with all its credited training and its document) and starts the new cycle at zero, using the Cert Type's current requirements. Training you've already logged that falls inside the new window can then credit itself to the new cycle. With it off, CertLocker simply extends the dates and keeps your current progress.

## Check the Dates

For Cert Types with a renewal schedule, CertLocker shows when training counts toward the new cycle (for example, "Training counts from April 1, 2028 through March 31, 2030") and suggests the new **Expiration**. For NREMT Certs, you'll also enter the **Approval (renewal) date**, the day the National Registry approved your renewal. For Cert Types without a renewal schedule, set the **Issued** and **Expiration** dates. Always check these against your new card.

## Attach Your New Card

Tap **Upload new document** and choose the file of your renewed Cert, and it will be attached when you finish renewing.

## Tap Renew

When everything looks right, tap **Renew** in the top right corner. You'll see a confirmation that your Cert was renewed, and the Cert will show its new dates and fresh progress.

{% hint style="info" %}
**If renewal doesn't go through**, keep the sheet open, read the message, and tap **Renew** again. It's safe to retry: CertLocker won't archive your cycle twice.
{% endhint %}

## Look Back at Past Renewals

Every renewal you process is listed under **Renewal cycles** at the bottom of the Renewals pane, below the **Active cycle**. Tap a previous renewal to see its dates, its Components, the training you applied, and the document from that cycle (tap **View archived attachment**). A past cycle's progress is frozen. If you need that cycle's evidence, tap the **Share Icon** and choose **Export training evidence**. The export uses the Training Records you have now, so keep your own copies of the evidence you submit.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.firecal.app/my-certs/renew-a-cert.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
